Is time capsule right for me???

Ok here is the situation.

I am living in a college house right now and I am thinking about getting time capsule. Right now my room is not wired for internet.

The time capsule would essentially be in my friends room right next door. The purpose of me getting time capsule would be to have wireless router and an external hard drive.

My question now is: Can my friend also use time capsule without access to the hard drive in time capsule? Essentially the only thing he needs it for is a a wireless router while for me I would need it for both a wireless router and a hard drive
