I currently have an iPhone XS Max 256GB. I’ve upgraded every year since the 4S and I’m getting the itch again. My XS Max is almost paid off, I’ve only used like 26GB out of 256GB, and I don’t take many pictures at all. The thing really holding me back is having this thing almost paid off I just have a fear of missing out on a lot. I haven’t had a chance to play with the new one. Is it that much better than the one I have? I’m not rolling in it by any means. An extra 52 bucks a month is basically a grocery trip for me which is awesome!

I am in the same boat - my personal phone is an XS Max but have no need to get the 11 Pro Max.
Don't take much photos so I will wait till next year to get the 5G 2020 version...

My other phone for work was a 7+ which I upgraded to 11 which was perfect - about the same size but bigger display area.... That was worthwhile of an upgrade because I got $350 trade in on my 3 year old phone ! Essentially I got the 11 for $350...

I'm a yearly upgrader but honestly from what you described I would keep the XS unless the extra battery life would be a huge factor for you. My favorite features of the 11 Pro are all the camera enhancements.

if you don't use the camera, don't upgrade.

I did this. It is worth it just because of the battery alone. The extra camera also helps. Plus the back glass is much better than the xs max.

size/weight is almost the same

If you wouldn’t be completely comfortable paying the phone’s full price in cash you definitely shouldn’t upgrade, especially if you have a XS Max.

God this forum is so toxic sometimes by providing cover and justification for terrible financial decisions. Some people upgrade every year because they want to and $1,200 is insignificant to them. Some upgrade because their old phone wasn’t cutting it anymore. Both totally valid. If $1,200 is significant to you and your current phone is the flagship from ONE YEAR AGO then you obviously shouldn’t upgrade. Can’t believe this needs to be said to be honest.

If you’re mostly satisfied with the XS Max, I’d say hold off on upgrading, unless having the best camera and longest battery life is REALLY important to you.

I came from the X and while I could have held off on getting a new phone for another year, I really wanted the larger screen; the battery life and camera were just bonus. If I had gotten the Xs Max last year I probably would have kept it.

I upgraded from the same phone exactly, and I'm enjoying the new phone. There is a noticeably difference in camera quality and battery life. If you don't take pics though, it wouldn't be worth the upgrade. If you save that extra $50/month towards the 2020 phone, you'll have it almost half paid off up front. Add the trade-in value for your xs max and you wouldn't have much left to pay on it.

Go play with it

I can’t tell you how many times someone says ‘worth’ in their thread title...

Anyways, What you (The OP) find ‘worth’ may not be somebody else’s value. Your best suggestion if you can afford it and if you think it’s necessary, take advantage of the 14 day return period. If you don’t like the 11 Pro, then revert back to your XS.

Personally if I’m out and see that you “only” have the iPhone XS Max and not the iPhone 11 Max Pro, I’m going to immediately think less of you as a person and believe myself to be a superior human being in every aspect because I own the “best” iPhone and you don’t. And it’s not just me who feels like that about you - it’s everyone.

Happiness is not supposed to be measured by ownership of material objects. Do you need a new phone? Of course not. Take that extra $52 a month, invest it every month in an index fund that tracks the performance of the s&p and retire early with no debt.
