I was told the latest version is 10.7. I updated twice and still at version 10.6.8.

Pse advise what's the latest?

Yup, its the last. Apple was rumored to be working on .9 update but they never released it.

Your post is a bit confusing. You are asking about v 10.6 which is Snow Leopard--and the latest Snow Leopard is 10.6.8. 10.7 is Lion. 10.8 is Mountain Lion--the latest Mac OS is at v 10.8.3 You are mixing version updates with totally new OS versions. You can update to 10.8 through the app store.

I tried to download some App but was prompted I must have version 10.7. Why is that so?
10.6.8 is the last version of 10.6.x. Apple has released 10.7 and is now on 10.8.3. 10.7 and 10.8 are paid upgrades. If you computer is compatible you can buy 10.8. directly through the App Store for $19 if you're in the US.
