Is W7 on Boot Camp running directly on the hardware or through a virtual layer?

Thinking about possibly getting a Mac Pro as I develop both for the iPhone and Windows.

If I install Windows 7 through Boot Camp will it run directly on the hardware, just like any other Intel Windows laptop, or is Boot Camp a virtual layer that W7 would run through?
