Awhile ago I encountered the computing concept of the Shelf https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shelf_(computing).

Also, I saw that NextStep OS offered a Shelf originally but for some strange reason it never was inherited by OS X.

I just found the Yoink software and it seems to do everything that NextStep Shelf did. Does anyone use it and how does it compare to the original Shelf?

I'm thinking of buying it. Thanks

Here's a review of Yoink

I've been using Yoink for years. It's fantastic. In particular, people who use Spaces/Full Screen apps will love it. However, Yoink is not actually similar to NeXT Shelf at all.

For that, you could try DefaultFolder X. It's only one small feature on a very long list of DefaultFolder features, but it is the same as Shelf(s) in NeXT.

I use Yoink, with my workflow I would be lost without it.

My traditional setup is two screens with a 8 Spaces and yoink allows me to move files/documents (well links really) into a temporary holding space then move to the other app and drag/drop the file/document as required. Sure I could just move the app to the other screen and simply drag and drop it without Yoink but I find for the low cost that this app was that it was worth it.

The real benefit is though when I am on the road and only have a MacBook then as I no longer have multiple screens I am effectively just using the same process, so it all works for me without having to change a process.

I did buy Yoink and I think it's great. I think it's vaguely similar to Shelf but I think it needs one extra feature. In order to copy and paste multiple times you must do the keyboard shortcut Option Drag File and then drop it onto Yoink and then click the lock button. There needs to be an icon on the Shelf for copy/paste multiple times.
