Push only works if the email provider provides it MobileME, Yahoo, and Microsoft Exchange Accounts all support it Gmail does not.

Im using yahoo emails on my iphone 3g and i have to manually refresh for it show any new email.

set up the iphone or the yahoo account. The iphone 3g is setup for push if thats what you mean.

That's only because Google hasn't enabled it to work over EDGE (how it knows I have no clue). Push from Gmail works on a wifi network fine (turn on push and then try it yourself).

Or 3G or WiFi. It's not enabled for the iPhone.

On the iPhone

Settings > Fetch New Data > Push ON/OFF

Make sure it's set to on.

Oh it works over wifi on the iPhone. Why? Got me but I've tested that myself.

My wife sent me a test email, 3 seconds later it's on my Mac and 8 seconds later it's on my iPhone. I have it set to fetch hourly. She sends another one and the same thing occurs. I turn off wifi and she sends another and I don't get it until the iPhone fetches it 8 minutes later. I'm not the only one whose experienced this (search it in the forums).

Like I said, it pushes over wifi but not over 3G or EDGE for whatever reason.

Doesn't work like that on mine.

my blackberry curve would send me an email right when i sent it to myself automatically i dont understand why this cant be done on my iphone 3g..

it does work i tried it with my iphone.

you either

a. have a bad setting

or

b. need to reinstall your phones firmware and try a fresh setup again

c. take it back and try again?

how are you getting the emails using edge wifi or 3g and how long after you have been sent the email does it show up on your phone.

It happens pretty much instantaneously for me. You have to tell it to push email rather than fetch. Who is your email provider? If it is gmail, then it will not work.

Push for Google is working for me over Wifi and Edge!

Push= On
Fetch= 1 hour

I sent some test emails and they show up in minutes (instead of every hour).

Try it for yourself... it's pretty cool

It works over EDGE too, but it's a little slower.

This isn't push it just checks your account at strange times outside of the fetch interval. You can thank the 2.1 update for this and the lack of fetching email while your iPhone is "asleep."

Gmail does not work with PUSH on the iPhone.

It doesn't check my account at strange times. I can send an email to myself from ANOTHER non-Gmail email address and it will show up on my iPhone a couple of minutes later. I can do this all day long... it really works. I don't know how it works, but it does. Also, it works while my iPhone is asleep so I don't know where you got that one. Maybe Gmail doesn't have MobileMe-type push, but I definitely get email faster than having it check once every hour.

Never had an issue with push....I have two accounts set up on my iphone and they both work flawlessly.
