Tel Aviv search for mattress containing $1M life savings

CNN said:
JERUSALEM (CNN) -- It was supposed to be a pleasant surprise, but turned into the shock of a lifetime.

A woman in Tel Aviv, Israel, gave her elderly mother a new mattress as a surprise gift, throwing out the old tattered bed her mother had slept on for decades. The gesture ended up bankrupting Annat's mother, who had stuffed her savings of nearly $1 million inside her old bed for decades, Annat told Israel Army Radio.

Israeli woman chucks mattress - holding mother's $1m life savings

What a mistake to make! :( :) :D

A Tel Aviv woman has been searching through Israeli rubbish dumps after she said she accidentally threw away a mattress containing $1m (£700,000).

The woman, identified only as Anat, had bought a new mattress for her mother as a surprise and threw away the old one, Yedioth Ahronoth newspaper reported.

But when the older woman returned home she "almost fainted", as she had hidden her entire life savings inside.

A search of three landfill sites has so far turned up nothing, said the paper.

Link…

Edit: How very strange. I searched pretty thoroughly… next time I'll stick to MRoogle. ;)

The grandmother is an idiot. You don't put $1M in cash under your mattress - you put it in a bank FFS. What if there had been a fire? All that money would have gone up in smoke. Not to mention, money only looses value stuffed under a mattress: in a bank she could have been earning $30 000 per year in interest!

There was a case a few months ago of someone finding thousands of dollars in cash. It was an old enough stash that, if it had been in a bank and collecting interest, it would have been worth tens of thousands. Instead, because it was kept in cash, there was only a few thousand dollars there.

Though you are quite correct. Hopefully the daughter and others have learned you have do not throw out someone else' property without consulting them, no matter the intentions.

Yeah, soon we will find out the g-daughter found the money and is hiding it. Great way to guarantee your inheritance.
