Issue capturing video with FCE

Ok so I have a fairly major issue capturing video with FCE. I usually work off of a Firewire 800 drive with it, and of course I capture from my camera using FW400. For some reason, my MBP just does not want to do that. If I connect the external drive via USB, I can capture just fine. If I have it hooked up via FW800, however, the pre-capture window says no preview available, even if the tape is playing (though I can still control the camera), and if I hit capture now, no video comes through, and after a few seconds it says it could not capture for this reason. I'll admit, I'm stumped. Any ideas?
