Hey guys !
I upgraded my iMac 2011 with a gtx 780 4gb ( by nick(d)vB )

Everything is working perfectly, but not when I am doing gaming, when I try to play games ( cs go , Minecraft ) the main menu works but not when I am in game, the first screen of the " in game " appear but then immediately my iMac crashes, I tried on Mac OS high Sierra and my bootcamp windows 8,1

I don't think this is an g p u issue since there is no " glitch " thing , and all my video and music production software works fine ( Logic Pro , pro tools , final cut pro )

Can you guys help me ? Thanks !

I would try running some graphics benchmarks to see if your GPU is really active and ok. Assuming you have a 27” machine, since installing that GPU in a 21.5” Mac is problematic.

The benchmarks is abnormally bad , and yes it’s a 27"

does this mean that the GPU is defective ( f****** eBay seller ) or it can be another thing ?

You should probably go back and reread the wikipost on the gpu replacement. I saw this under hardware problems:

20. bad Valley performance compared to published results: a single missing temp sensor will deny the CPU boosting . Valley depends to 50% on the CPU. So you will only see max values with a properly boosting CPU. Check all cables, probably do a SMC reset (how to: section other 4. below) and a cold start.

Also did you use replace the heat sink on the GPU with the 3-pipe version? That seems to be necessary since the 780m runs hotter.

All I just did while for the upgrade of my iMac 2011 was plug & play the new gtx 780 ( with the new vBios ) after puts some k4-pro and k5-pro thermal paste in it , I also set correctly the fan controls . Then... th

did I missed something ? What is valley ?

Tried SMC/NVRAM/PRAM reset and the problem is still here , everything is working fine , Logic Pro works flawlessly .
But then when i load League Of Legends , the main menu and loading screen are fine , but when the game start , the 2/3 first frame of the game are showed then it immediately crash , I have high Sierra but the same thing happen with my Windows 10 bootcamp...
Also the benchmark program are crashing when they are testing the GPU

I have litteraly no solution left haha
If there is litteraly nothing I can do I will only use this computer for producing stuff and buy another computer for playing Minecraft

I wonder if you are missing some software patch that lets the card run correctly. Maybe install High Sierra again? Maybe even try booting through OpenCore to see if that helps. I don't really have any better ideas for you.

Clearly the signs of an overheating GPU.
Or when the GPU is heated up, some parts on the MXM card caused short-circuit and shutdown the entire machine.

See if this could help you:
I tried this , and still crashes when i start playing after loading time ( league of legends )

The GPU is clearly not heating extremely since the macs fan control are set correctly , it’s much colder than the previous AMD 6XXX series, but again when the previous AMD was defective it was crashing when gaming but also when I was doing intensive Logic Pro task .. the Nvidia crash while gaming , it don’t make any sense haha

If the issue is only gaming, then the best solution will be stop gaming on your iMac.
But as you said, benchmarking programs also crashed.

So I assume the issue is the contact between the GPU chip and the heatsink.
Use some temperature monitoring apps to see if there are any abnormalities in the temperature readings, if there are, maybe you should reassemble the MXM card.
Too thick thermal pad/paste applied on the VRAM chips may cause the GPU chip making bad contact with the heatsink.
That's why others advice to use the copper shims between the GPU chip and the heatsink.

when I plugged the GPU I put a looot of thermal paste , isn’t it suppose to be a good thing ? If one day I will open the iMac again I will check this up, but for the moment i will stay like this ( bye gaming ! )

It is supposed to be a bad practice. The surfaces of GPU die and heatsink are supposed to make contact, with some pressure. Thermal paste is supposed to fill in the tiny scratches on both surfaces. If you have like 0.1mm gap between them and try to fill that gap with thermal paste, then heat dispassion will not be good enough for heavy GPU strain.

Ok i am back , since the GPU seems to also crash when I am running Logic Pro , I runs Mac fan controls and.. SURPRISE the GPU sensor don’t show the temperature ... so I think it’s a bad thermal paste use.... Can you guys show me a right picture on a good thermal paste use in a picture ??
And also , is there any mods to do for the heat sink when I set the gtx 780 into it ?

Here is the picture of the fans control

It is my understanding that iMac cannot read the temperature sensor in the GPU with the new bios. Also I see in the original thread that you need the 3 pipe heat sink but that should already be in the 2011 iMac 27". I don't think that you need to modify the heat sink. But if you go back to that original thread there is some discussion on moving the ODD temp sensor to the GPU heat sink and use that to control the ODD fan.

Other than that, I see that you should have the gtx 780M card and not gtx 780.

So if I am referring to you all my temperature sensor on the screenshot seems fine , and yes I have the gtx 780m does it makes a difference in the problem ??

Since the iMac can't read the temperature sensor in the GPU (embedded in the chip) then we can't be sure of the actual GPU chip temperature. We just have the sensor on the heat sink. But if the GPU chip is not making good contact with the heat sink, then the GPU chip could be too hot although the heat sink looks ok. Maybe you can look into the copper shims that Nguyen mentioned.
