Issue Partitioning Disk Using Disk Utility

I have an external drive that I partitioned into NTFS and HFS. There were some issue with the HFS drive and I ended up erasing and deleting it.

When I try to re-add the HFS partition, disk utility gets stuck in the "Preparing to partition disk" phase. I checked the logs, and the last message is:

Preparing to partition disk: “WD My Book 1140 Media”

I was wondering what I can do without re-partitioning the whole drive?
