Last night when unlocking my 17 pro max, the screen momentarily lit up (showing the background wallpaper) then faded to black. This repeated four or five times. Tapping the screen had no impact, the phone would do nothing. I turned the phone off and on again and it hasn’t repeated since. Anyone else experienced this or know what was happening?

Try resetting it - erase and start over.

I had to do that after my initial setup didn't restore everything from my Mac that had the recent backup.

Newly launched phones come with early versions of the iOS they release with. Strange things tend to happen and these don't necessarily indicate a hardware failure.

I had my launch day iPhone 5 running iOS 6.0 glitch on me in early 2012. The screen got a whole bunch of static. And then it just cleared and never happened again. Turned out later on to be some sort of bug with iOS 6.0.

Then there was the launch of iOS 9.0 where Apple was dealing with issues for weeks.

It's early days right now for iOS 26 and the new iPhones.

Thanks, I’m hoping it is just that. But curious to know if anyone else has had it happen to them. Other than that I’ve been really happy with the 17pm!

My current iPhone is the 11 Pro Max and I've had it on the developer betas of iOS 26 since it released. There has been more than one instance where I have unlocked my phone and the only thing showing was my wallpaper - no icons. Turning the screen off, then re-unlocking again fixed it. It has to be iOS 26 because in all the earlier versions of iOS that have been on this phone, this has never happened.

Apple takes a couple of releases into any new version of iOS to become truly stable. That's why a lot of people wait until the .1 updates or more before they upgrade. But new iPhones? You get the original early versions with their bugs.
