I’m having an issue with my external display. When I open my laptop it doesn’t default to my main monitor, I have to drag everything across from my MacBook Air. I never had this issue with my MacBook Pro. I also can’t wake it up unless I open the laptop screen. Can anyone help?

For the waking, are you using a bluetooth keyboard and/or mouse?
Go to Settings, Bluetooth, Advanced, and make sure 'Allow Bluetooth devices to wake this machine' is turned on.

To make your external monitor your main monitor, you probably just need to go to System Preferences > Displays > Arrangement, and in the images of your two displays drag the menubar from the Air to the external monitor.
