Issues importing messages Apple Mail

I have a macbook air A1237 that had developed some filesystem troubles. Disk utility and DiskWarrior were both unable to fix the issue. I was able to recover the full user's folder. Unable to use migration assistant as i only have the user's folder. I have since wiped the drive and reinstalled Snow leopard. Updated to 10.6.8. Now if run the import from the mail client it imports without error but all the folders are empty. I can navigate through the folders and find the ***.emlx files and they will open. When I try to copy the folders manually while the mail app is closed then i get the folders and the number to the right indicating unread mails but when i click to access a folder it still shows empty and the number immediately disappears.
