In case you haven't heard, there are new Anti-piracy warning messages at the beginning of new DVDs. I don't know if they have anything do to with it, but I have one of these new DVDs and I couldn't get past the rating screen. The DVD keeps freezing. The only way to get it past the freeze is to his fast-forward.

I am trying the DVD now on a TV with a built-in DVD player and its playing just fine. Never had issues.

I just got done watching a different, new DVD, but that one didn't have the new warnings at the beginning. That DVD played just fine. Which makes me believe its the new warning DVDs that are having the issues.

These are the new warnings I'm talking about.

What app are you using to watch the DVDs? Apple's DVD Player? If so, try VLC. Or maybe xbmc. That has an option in the settings to try to skip introductions before the dvd menu.
