I decided to run disk utility today after sometime and found out my main drive was broken and needed to be repaired, booting from the mac os x installation DVD. I have a macbook, and I tried the macbook air usb installation disk and the iMac's Installation disk also. I don't have my original one, but i guessed it's all the same os so it should be ok.

The issue is that when I boot from either of these disks, after i choose the language, immediately a window pops up and says that mac os x can not be installed on this drive, and the whole menu bar including the utilities, are grey and unclickable, therefore I can't repair my disk. I don't seem to be able to get around it.

Any ideas? Thank you in advance! :)

You cannot install a disk or USB from a different Mac.
A MBA thumb drive will only install on an MBA
an iMac DVD will only install on the iMac model it shipped with.
You need to get a retail DVD ora fullfillment DVD from apple.

thank you so much!!!! i suspected this but i couldn't find a way to confirm it :)
