issues with Microsoft office for mac 2008

Hello everyone,
I am running Office for Mac 2008 on my MacBook Pro 2009, Mac OS X 10.6.8 Snow Leopard. I have run into a problem with Excel. I was creating a chart and when I was trying to edit the chart using formatting palette, "chart options", "chart data", and "chart style" did not show up. I tried it while having the chart selected and w/o having it selected and still, nothing showed up. I have the latest update for office- 12.3.6
