My external hard drive (a WD Passport, 250 GB) won't mount, so I tried to repair it in disk utility. I have my Time Machine backups on the external hard drive as well as my iTunes and some other documents and things for school. First I tried to repair the time machine portion and I got the following error message:
Verify and Repaor volume "Time Machine Backups"
Checking Journal HFS Plus volume.
Detecting a case-sensitive catalog.
Checking Extents Overflow file.
Checking Catalog file.
Invalid index key.
Rebuilding Catalog B-tree.
The volume Time Machine Backups could not be repaired.
Error: Filesystem verify or repair failed.
I then tried to verify it in case that was the problem, but got the same message. I did the same two steps with the entire drive, and no luck. It still says it can't be repaired. The buttons to Verify/Repair Disk Permissions are greyed out.
So my question is, is there some other way to repair the disk? If not, can I somehow recover what's on it without paying over $100 for a program like Disk Warrior that might not even work? There's some really important stuff on there that I haven't backed up (I know, my mistake) plus thousands (maybe tens of thousands) of dollars worth of music and videos that I would really like to get back.
I'm not sure if this makes a difference, but I think the disk got damaged when I was watching a TV show I had purchased on iTunes while it was still in the process of downloading. The show froze (both video and sound) and I got the pop-up saying that I had improperly removed the device. I didn't actually remove it, I guess the connection either to the drive itself or to the usb somehow got partially dislodged.
Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Also, if you think it would be worth it to make a Genius Bar appointment, I've been considering that too.
