Issues with Smart Cover?

Question. If you have a smart cover on, and you lift up your ipad from the back (i.e. with the smart cover face down), isnt the smartcover still supposed to stay on (i.e. not flap open) because of the magnets? I am trying to figure out if my smart cover (or ipad) is defective. Thanks!
