Then I manually dragged the contacts to the iPod and got the a smilar result, anybody experience this issue?

What I did to resolve this was reset the ipod settings in isync and it worked. I would give more information on how to do this, but I am Macless at the mo. I take it that you are also using the latest version of isync as this problem hasn't happened to me for a long time. Hope this helps...
