With 120Hz screen, a better chipset, better battery etc. Do you think the regular iPhone 17 is going to be the biggest seller this year? I was thinking of changing down from the Pro Max to the regular Pro, but looking at the regular 17, it looks the best of the bunch, pound-for-pound.

For one thing the 17 will weigh much much less than any Pro Max (I view this as a very good thing).

Just hope its full Promotion VRR, and not fixed 120 hz because that will kill the battery quickly, but for sure OP the base 17 looks really good.

I agree the iPhone 17 is shaping up to be attractive, finally getting ProMotion.

But it all depends on price. The 16e is actually a pretty high-end phone in many ways, and it’s priced higher than the SE that it sort of replaced.

That plus US tariffs, the rising cost of everything, and the possibility that the 17 Pro becomes even higher-end (with a larger telephoto camera module, a fatter battery in the Pro Max, etc.), I fear the 17 may see a price increase.

Maybe Apple will start storage at 256 GB to make that price increase look better value? But I doubt it. More likely they’ll finally move the 17 Pro to 256 GB like the Max, and only move to 256 GB in the base iPhone with the 18 generation.

Yes but if the 17 has 8gb of ram and the 17 pro has 12, for longevity it might be a huge difference

When you remember that the X had 3 and the XS had 4… and the difference in iOS support was massive. Maybe it was also because of the processor though? I’m not sure

Good point. 12 GB versus 8 GB is a compelling advantage for the Pros (and probably Air).

I’d still consider a phone with 8 GB, though. As recently as the 14 generation, even the Pro Max only had 6 GB of RAM. 8 GB only arrived with the 15 Pro. The driver for all this splurging on RAM recently appears to be AI.

iPhone X - 3GB RAM
iOS 11 to iOS 16

iPhone XS - 4GB RAM
iOS 12 to iOS 18

iPhone 11 Pro - 4GB RAM
iOS 13 to iOS 26 [19]

iPhone 12 Pro - 6GB RAM
iOS 14 to iOS 28 [21]

To me the only interesting ones are the 17 Air or any of the Pros depending on what screens size you want, the only reason I see to get the base 17 is if cost matters to you.

And its weight. The one big advantage the non Pro models have over the Pro's is that they are much lighter and nicer to carry around.

I would absolutely have considered the Air if it had the same camera setup as the regular 17, but I used the wide angle lens a lot so that’s out unfortunately.

My issue as well. I tried this when the 16 first came out after the 15PM as my daily, but I couldn't get over not having the 5x zoom, we went to an air show and what a difference it made for those of us with the Pro, the non-pros in our group were disappointed and are now proud owners of the 16PM.

So maybe if it's somebody that doesn't care about the camera so much.🤷‍♂️

That's why I said the Air or the Pro, the rumoured weight of the Air is even lower so if that is an important part that's the one to choose.

I think spec wise it will be. But design wise it’s likely gonna be hard to tell them apart comparing with regular 16. Geeks will go for it all day long, but I’m not too sure about “regular people” 😂

Another plus, in a way: the front-page news suggests Apple is moving to a staggered launch plan for the plain and Pro models, meaning the 17 will be the latest model for longer (until 2027, the rumours say, while the Pro will be updated again in 2026).
