Hello Guys

I noticed that some members stated that they do this

Be careful as this practice can cause to sitting in the toilet more time than necessary and it can produce Haemorrhoids and other problems

While it can be nice to do it, it is not recommended (I am medical doctor)
This has also been reported by Karen Kingston in her book

More time than expected in the toilet means that gravity and improper transit will impact health and lead to prolapse.

I know a case of a patient who had haemorrhoids and his practice was to sit with the iPad in the toilet for a while. He had surgery and this was painful.

Not worth it.

Is this tongue in cheek? Because in the past we had a Readers Digest ( wow, I miss those) and the iPad has replaces those. No difference, right?
Checkin for Readers Digest app...

So, it's against your medical advice to take the iPad to the toilet?

Reading on the toilet is a very traditional male past-time (the father taking the morning paper to the loo after the breakfast), the iPad has just changed the medium.

I would suggest that you, as a medical doctor, demonstrate evidence-based peer-reviewed work supporting your proposal before suggesting that this is medical advice.

It is of course more sociable to take nothing with you to the loo, get it all done quickly and rejoin your family, but sometimes it's the time away from your family that you go for.

This is not medical advice, just my thoughts on the matter.

Speak for yourself and don't say it traditional.

Not believing you......

I do not use my phone or iPad on the toilet as I believe there are more comfortable places to sit. But some people are different than others and I have always been told that hemorrhoids could be caused by "straining" and one should take their time to not force things.

The act of sitting on a toilet should not cause hemorrhoids and I would worry more about thrombosis for you hour long toilet sitters. I am no doctor but I stayed at a Best Western motel about a year ago!

I work in healthcare and can confirm what this person is saying. If you are sitting for that long, you may be having trouble dooing the deed... lol. That can cause straining which will cause the issues. Nevertheless, I take mine in there every time.

As others have stated, people have been doing this for years with magazines, etc. Just wondering why it's only just been mentioned now with tablets and phones.

That's a good question. I would guess that it may be because it's a whole lot easier to get caught up in a game than an article. At least that has been my experience. Even worse for me is getting caught up reading the forums. Time stops at that point. :D

I understand the theory behind it, but can't say it's affected me over the years and I started with magazines and progressed to my phone and tab.

I don't think it's that bad, though I don't spend a lot of time in the washroom on my devices anymore. Now back in the day when I had my GameBoy...

Come on doc. What is actually more important is to get plenty of fiber in your diet so you don't need to strain thus hemorrhoids are less likely. Sitting longer than normal on the toilet won't cause issues by itself but couple it with hard stools and straining, then you have a problem.

I say read away on the toilet, just make sure your diet is good.

This sort of advice from a purported professional is one of the reasons why I do not bother with mds anymore. I gave up on western medicine awhile back and have not regretted it.

The warning is nothing new in the least. Doctors have been warning about this for decades albeit for newspapers and magazines.
