It tells me d/l application update, but I did, won't disappear

I ALWAYS have red application numbers telling me I have to download apps, but when I sync my iphone, it downloads some of them, but still tells me on my iphone I have, for example, 4 updates....arghhhh

so the update numbers never go away

any ideas?
