it turns on fine but won't get past the Mac OS X loading screen

i have been given a powerbook g4 that is in fine condition but when i turn it on it says "loading mac os x" then does not proceed past that point.

have never used a mac before and am not familiar with any keys to use to enter setup and such.

could anyone please help???
