Hi community,

so I don't know if you people know this feature, but when you're in the Finder and you go to View > Show View Options, you can tick a checkbox called something like "Show item info", which will basically show certain informations below your files in the Finder:

I find this feature very useful, because when I have a lot of (similar) files it gives me the possibility to chose the right one quickly (for example the one with the right size).

Now, my problem is that sometimes that info disappears. For example when I drag any new file to the desktop, let's say from Photos to the desktop. Then I would have to go to the View Options again and un-tick/re-tick the "Show Item Info" checkbox. That's very annoying.

Does anyone else have this issue and has anyone found a fix to this?

Thanks!

I've never noticed that, but I wonder if it just needs to refresh itself. Have you tried closing the window and then going back to it? Maybe that would do a "reset" of some sort and show the info.

Well, these things are on my desktop, so the only way to refresh it is to force quit the Finder, and then the infos would in fact reappear. The thing is, I can't force quit Finder all the time.

Ahh, this issue is really annoying. I guess it's one of the small features that not many people use and therefore Apple also doesn't really pay attention to it.

You could try deleting your Finder and Desktop .plist files. New ones will be generated when you Restart.

Hold down the Option key and click on Go in the Menu. Select Library. (release and press the key again to locate it if you don't see it.) Open the Preferences folder. Find those two plist files, delete them, then Restart.

I think someone already suggested that once, longer time ago, when I had already reported about this issue. My desktop file has apparently been there for 5 years, so who knows. I have deleted them now, I'll keep an eye oute if something changes.

Three years have passed, I'm no longer running High Sierra but Ventura 13.5, and this problem still persists.

Is Apple really that bad at this? I mean, I could imagine they don't test all features. Probably just a few people use this. But I think it's extremely useful.

Especially when you have multiple images for example, and you need to chose the right resolution. You don't have to open item infos, but you see the infos (like the size, resolution or number of items) right away and save time.

High Sierra was released in 2017. But I think I might've had this problem earlier than that. So Apple hasn't fixed this is at least 6 years. Lol.

My Item Info shows up for subfolders. I can't say I've ever noticed that disappearing. I'm running 13.4.1

Whatever the reason is for yours going AWOL, it's certainly persistent!

Maybe you didn't notice it disappears sometimes? It's very subtle and I don't notice it until I need it. I got myself a new Mac with Ventura and I didn't even copy anything from my old Mac to it. So it's completely new and there's no links to my old Mac or anything. No settings overtaken or anything restored from the old Mac, everything is brand new and was never in contact with my old Mac.

I've seen other people have this issue as well. It's just that nobody really used this feature I think.

Still showing up. I suppose it's possible that I've not noticed something being invisible that's usually visible. It's not like I inspect my folders for Item Info on a regular basis.

What's also possible is that I have other settings on my new Mac that I also had on my old Mac that interfere with this feature.

The Finder is a disappointment for many users. I've had instances over the years of folders changing view options on me.

Also, failure to remember window size and position drives me nuts. I tried an app called "Finder Fix" for that but when using it my Finder windows wouldn't remember a new column layout in list view.
