items on clipboard cannot be pasted

I have an external Hard drive. have always previously been able to copy and past files from it to desktop or HD on MBP. Now when i try to drag or copy and paste, I get this msg: the items on teh Clipboard cannot be pasted to this location. One or more of the items may have been deleted or are no longer available. I repaired permissions on my MBP and it did not solve the issue. External HD icon also changed from color to b/w. ??
