iTouch 8gb 2.2.1 to 3.1.2 HELP??

Hello,
I just got my ipod 8g model: a1288
I'm trying to upgrade from 2.2.1 to 3.1.2

is there a way to do this for free
i already downloaded the 3.1.2 version.
They say theres a way to do it with i tune, but its not working.
In itunes when i click restore it should let me browse to 3.1.2 that i downloaded

but instead it downloads the orginal firmware 2.2.1 and installs automaticlly?
i even tryed with older itune version

You have to press down a key while clicking the "restore" button. On a PC it's shift+click restore. Not sure which key it was on a Mac, but there's three keys to try (alt, cmd, ctrl).
