Was experimenting with some of the barcode scanner apps and noticed that the results were spotty plus notes from one author explained that the itouch camera didn't have a close enough focus to be reliable for images at barcode distance.

On a hunch, I pulled off my reading glasses and tried again holding one of the lenses over the touch lens and went from almost no scans to 100% scans.

Since I frequently need close shots (such as circuit boards and small parts) and reading glasses are always with me, the usefulness of the touch's camera is significantly expanded.

Hope that this information is of value to others.

>> Try other apps. RedLaser worked fantastically for 1D barcodes. <<

Thanks for the suggestion. I had tried a number of different apps before the post and I agree that RedLaser seems to be the best.

However, while I had no significant problems scanning QR codes (since they are large and designed with camera scanning in mind) scanning other codes such as UPC codes was essentially not usable.

Loaning the touch my reading glasses cured the spotty results immediately.
