Have you tried a force restore?
* Connecting your device to your computer with iTunes open.
* Hold down the home and sleep/wake button.
* Keep both held in until the apple logo appears (up t o 20secs)
* When the apple logo shows release the sleep/wake button but keep the Home button held down. The iTunes logo and a picture of the USB should then show on your touch.
* Release the Home button and follow the instructions within iTunes.

I had to do this and restore from a backup. It takes a fair while as you have to resync all media but I've had no problems since.

good luck :)

It happened to me once because I uninstalled something from apple, try to re-install itunes.

Thanks Andy

seems to have done the trick. it is at least repsonding and now charging again.
