iPod touch iTouch even exchange?

I received a new 16gb ipod Touch today in conjunction with a grad class I am taking on podcasting. The box came from amazon, I was hoping for it to come from apple direct. My question is, what are my chances of being able to take it to the apple store unopened, and even exchange it for a 32gb, just throw in the $100 difference?. Your thoughts?
