I guess it wasn't a popular seller, but just FYI for those who do still want it, Hermes is offering it in both sizes, so it is still obtainable, just at a higher price point.

It was VERY popular--a lot of us are PO'd that they restricted the color to only the ultra-expensive line of watches. I am buying the graphite one as a distant second choice... Sometimes Apple makes some bonehead decisions just for the sake of profit, rather than support the ones who use their products.

Because they know people like you will still spend your money with Apple. Regardless.

Hopefully this is just a single generation decision and it comes back with the Series 7 as I absolutely love the look of my SBSS S4.

The new yellower Gold might be an option as I hear it looks like the original Edition watches and I really liked the 18kt models of those and most of my straps would carry over (I'd need to swap lugs, but I did that for my SBSS) and once I can actually see Graphite in person maybe it will work, as well.

If it doesn’t look good in person, and doesn’t suit my space black link bracelet, I’ll be returning it and opting for the Hermes.

I’m trying to be optimistic and believe that Apple wouldn’t just substitute the space black for an entirely different colour, I’m hoping this a more improved space black. But that’s all we got right right now until we see it in person, hope.

Earlier I had been toying with the idea of replacing my Series 3 SS Space Black with matching Space Black link bracelet with a Series 6 version, and was disappointed, too, when I realized that it wasn't being offered this time around. It's so elegant and gorgeous, I am surprised that Apple chose to leave it out of the lineup. I am not interested in graphite -- that's not the same at all. It's good to know that Hermes is still offering it, though, in both sizes -- I'll have to check that out.

There’s still a possibility that it’ll look good, we just need to wait and see.

I think this is cost-saving measure.

Interesting to note: the Space Grey Milanese loop was always more expense than the Silver Milanese. Now the new Graphite Milanese is the same price as the Silver.

That leads me to believe that the graphite is a little cheaper to manufacture.

At the end of the day though, Apple's manufacturing cost isn't important. The question is how does it look in real life by comparison.

John Gruber thinks that Graphite might be the glossy sibling to the matte space black titanium Edition option, which those who own it / have seen it say looks more dark grey than black.

But I love the really glossy DLC finish of the SBSS - I feel if there was a Space Black Ceramic, it would look like this.

Out of interest do you have the sales figures for the SBSS showing its very popular ? I haven't seen them myself

Im puzzled why you feel its a decision based on profit ? surely if SB is so popular why would Apple potentially push the revenue away ?

I have owned every generation of the Watch in SS space black. Very disappointed and will skip the 6th generation. The added features are not worth it to me. So I will keep the 5 and hopefully by the 7th we will have the color again

What leads you to think that the graphite DLC finish is cheaper to create than the space black DLC finish?

FYI - the milanese loops dropped from $149 to $99 when the Series5 came out.

This year's graphite version is the same price as the Space Black has been for the past year.

Fingers crossed. Looking at the product photos of the Series 5 SB they look very similar. For whatever reason Apple really wants their photos to distinguish the case from the glass, and they seem to go to great lengths to make that happen. The SB has always had a finish that blends in with the screen, but the product photos never really made that apparent from what I recall.

It looks grey and muted -- I love the soft shine and gleam of my Space Black!!

The space black aluminium looks soft and muted too, completely different to the stainless steel version of last year. I hope graphite can live up to it.

Only that the fact that the Space Grey Milanese was originally more expensive than the Silver. I am assuming that was related to cost of the material.

If that's true, then it stands to reason that the cost to manufacture the Space Grey watch is higher than the Silver one, meaning Apple was making a smaller profit on it. So maybe Graphite is a way to bring the margins in-line with the Silver.

I'm speculating obviously. It could be that they just came to the conclusion that Graphite is a better choice than Space Grey for other reasons.

I have seen some pictures compared of the SB Hermès and the Graphite and they look almost identical. Maybe just a name change?

Silver's also a different thing since it doesn't get the DLC (Diamond-Like-Coating) that creates the SpaceBlack and Graphite models.

So while it may be that Silver is less costly to manufacture, I'm not clear on how that is relevant to speculation that there's cost difference between the Space Black DLC and the Graphite DLC.

Yep. Here's S6 Graphite SS, S6 Hermes SBSS, and S5 SBSS.

Which is which? :)

I doubt we'll know anything concrete until folks have them in person.
