.. and here's why.

First iPhone: iPhone - named iPhone 2G by the community
Second iPhone: iPhone 3G - confused the general public (and still confuses a couple of my friends)
Third iPhone: iPhone 3Gs - boom, almost there
Fourth iPhone: iPhone 4 - finally fixed.

It seems totally un-Apple-y to name a fifth iPhone 4S.

Not really. But Steve was on medical leave when the 3GS came out. So we know he never approved of that name.

I highly doubt he was left out of the loop on deciding on a name for a product. Nothing like anything I've heard about Jobs.

He's on medical leave now but he's still presenting today's keynote.

You are crazy if you think they named a product as important as that without consulting him first.

Even though Jobs was on medical leave then and is now, he's still in control over a lot of the decisions. I don't think anyone would attempt to name a product without his approval, even when he's on medical leave.

i do agree with the reasoning though.

iPhone -> iPhone 3G -> iPhone 3GS is and was stupidly confusing for the regular customer.

i was so happy they didn't call the iPhone 4 'iPhone HD', which it was rumored to be named.

it's that whole generic 'MovieTitle - Resurrection', 'MovieTitle - Reloaded', 'MovieTitle - The Return' deal that lacks any kind of implied chronologic order ;)

Eventually they're going to drop it to simply "iPhone".

He's on leave yet he still comes into work to do a presentation? That's dedication. Mind you, when you have infinite funds, what else is there to do?

Impressive considering his annual salary is $1.

I'm pretty sure the OP is on the right track. I think this year will be '5' and next year will be '6' and that'll be that.

Everyone's so hung up "how big" each upgrade will be. I don't think it matters. I really do think they'll just stick with plain old numbers for the next few years.

So what are they going to call it when the iPhone gets 4G LTE .... go from iPhone 5 to iPhone 4GS? The naming is all screwed

My vote is for "iPhone manbearpig".

What's wrong with calling it the iPhone 6?

I'm serious. They called OS X 10.5 'Leopard,' right? They didn't call it 'OS X Time Machine.'

And it did all right.

The iphone will wake up from a daydream in the shower and we will find out that the whole naming scheme never really happened. JR will not have been shot!

If Jobs is on disability and collecting a disability paycheck he can't give today's WWDC. That's fraud.

:D
