well finally did it...deleted the old tiger partition for debian....other then xfce does anyone know the best desktop environment for these older machines?

As far as desktop environments specifically, I'd look also into LXQt.

You may have better luck or performance building your desktop from a simple windows manager base.

I am not tested desktops on my Powermacs, but on my AmigaOne X1000 (dual G5/1.8 GHz) with Debian Sid I had this results.
Mesa is fastest on Mate, second is Lxde and third is lxqt.
Also Debian Sid is faster distro than Fienix or Fedora.
I used long time Lxde, but now I switched to Mate.

For limited resources, or not, i much prefer IceWM with the help of pcmanfm to handle desktop icons, wallpaper, and file management duties. The combo is super lightweight. My 12" powerbook boots to desktop with just 98mb of ram used. I also use this combo on my G5 as seen here.

Another vote for IceWM. FWIW it's the default for AntiX, which will run on a shoestring if it has a CPU that isn't 16-bits or less.
