iTunes 10.0.1 Update Issue

I'm just wondering what may have went wrong with updating 2 iPads today (one an iPad Air and the other a 4th Gen iPad). I used iTunes to update both. I selected update in iTunes and it e downloaded the package. Based on previous updates I expected to be prompted to enter the passcode before anything happened to the iPad. This didn't happen with either iPad. The software was installed and then when the iPad restarted it got stuck on the Apple logo and said I needed to enter the passcode. I ended up restoring to resolve the issue. Has anyone else faced this issue and does anyone know what causes it?
