I am running iTunes 10 on a 2.16Ghz Intel with all my music, TV etc stored on a Verbatim external 2Tb USB hard drive.

Since yesterday, whenever I sync my iPod the external drive disappears from the Mac and the sync fails. I get "track not available" icons for all my music and a warning not to unplug external media without disconnecting it first - although I didn't unplug the drive. I have to restart the Mac and wait for the external HD to remount, which takes some time as it is 2TB in size. Disk Utility shows the external drive as present but the volume where all the music is stored as greyed-out and unmounted (after 20+ minutes the missing volume mounts).

However both my iPad and iPhone sync fine on exactly the same connection.

Is this likely to be an issue with power load and/or heat? I have tried switching USB ports on the Mac, allowing the HD to cool, repairing permissions on the HD and numerous restarts all to no avail.

The iPod is a 5th gen 80Gb model which has worked without a hitch for almost four years. The issue appears to be with the external HD and not the iPod.

Connection tree is as follows:

iPod/Pad/Phone----USB--->>MAC<<----USB-----external HD

Any help or suggestions gratefully received. Thanks.
