something really sucks about the Apple 10B countdown. I disconnected from the net and the countdown was still going on.

You don't suppose they could have set the counter to show the average download rate, by any chance? Surely you didn't think it was a live, real-time collation of actual worldwide music sales?

and here come the apple fanboys again trying to defend apple. I have nothing against apple, and love to use their products, but c'mon. You can't consider it a "live countdown" anymore. Especially when the countdown goes on even though I disconnected from the net...

But where, dear heart, did Apple claim it is a live countdown.
You chose to believe that.
You were mistaken.
It happens.

This is nothing specifically to do with Apple. These sort of countdowns are vary rarely, if ever, done on anything other than an average usage basis. If nothing else, it is generally not possible to easily get the actual numbers.

The thought that it would show the actual number never entered my head, to be honest. That would be very unusual, most likely extremely difficult to do and probably no more accurate than what they use.

I thought the OP was sarcastically joking and was just about to chime in to say that people need to work on developing more robust senses of humor. Alas, that does not appear to be the case.

Well duh, the world doesn't stop downloading apps because you've disconnected from the net

HAHA you would say that.

it would be interesting to note how often they update the counter though - because obviously they would base those numbers on an average of the download rate from observing.

somebody should check out modification dates ;) make a chart.

From a quick and completely not thought out look at the source code, it appears the counter doesn't even go to to 10 billion.
This neat little piece: maxCount = 9999999990

But seriously, who would honestly believe that such a counter would be directly fed by live downloads? What a complete and total waste of resources.

This reminds me of the story about the woman that was mad that she couldn't see herself in her backyard waving to the satellite on Google Earth.

Paging Doctor Q...
HAHAHA! very appropriate. if only threads had invites ;)

What a complete and total waste of resources.
agreed. it just doesnt make any sense at all does it? imagine the load on their servers - it was on the front page..
