itunes 11 playlists on external hard drive

Can a playlist made in itunes 11 be stored and run from my external hard drive like my main music library?

Where is the playlist located when I make it? is it locked on the computer that I made it on?

I would like to be able to store it on my external hard drive along with my music library.

I tried an export of the playlist containing a few selected albums from my music library and chose my external hard drive for location, I then went to check and it just saved a text file with a list of the albums.
