Just updated to iTunes 12.5.2 on Sierra and have problem or bug (?):

In previous versions of iTunes, it was possible to delete songs from the library from a Smart Playlist. All I had to do was select the song in the playlist and press Alt-Del. iTunes would ask for confirmation and then delete the file.

Pressing the same combination in a Smart Playlist in iTunes 12.5.2 does nothing. It does work in the main songs list, but not in the playlist. Checking the menus, I also find a new option in the "Song" menu called "Remove from library," but that is always greyed out in smart playlists and seems to be only available in the main Songs list as well.

I do frequent editing of my library based on smart playlists, so this is a significant problem for me. Anyone else experiencing this or - even better - have a solution (I've sent feedback to Apple, but my hopes aren't high)?

Apple has gone out of their way to make deleting anything difficult at best.....so just live with it...Apple Geeks decided you should just keep the file....I was praying that right clicking anything ( to delete)with the new OS would come but instead we got iWatch interaction, more EMOJ and other crap....you may have paid for your computer...but Apple owns it.

It's still there, it's just not mapped to anything anymore.

Go to System Preferences, Keyboard, Shortcuts, App Shortcuts, hit the +.

Select iTunes in the Application dropdown, type "Delete From Library"

And then assign it to something. Apparently you can't use the delete key though.

Thanks for the response. However, while it will map the "Delete From Library" function to a self-selected key combination, that combination will not work in Smart Playlists (it does work in Songs and manual playlists). Apparently, Apple has chosen to restrict "Delete From Library" from Smart Playlists as of 12.5.2... which really messes up my workflow. :-(

Ugh. So much this. I frequently need to delete tracks from my recently added smart playlist. Between this and removing the option for right-click convert to Apple is going out of their way of hobbling musicians and DJ's workflows!

I noticed the same thing. Very annoying, but removing functionality is Apple's M.O. these days. It just took them a year to bring back location tagging and the location map in Photos, the deletions of which were idiotic in the first place. Hell, this is the same company that thinks taking MagSafe off its new $2,500 MBPs is progress.

This is an infuriating change. The only workaround I can find is to locate the song in whatever album or artist view it sits in, and delete from there.

I'm just waiting for the "minimal" iTunes version that finally kills off all the power user features for people who actually manage their own music files.

The weirdest thing is, "Remove download" is still an option in playlists. It seems like far more people — on a computer — would want to simply delete a song rather than delete the download.

WHAT THE **** APPLE! Really?! The feature I used the most for library organisation and cleaning, removed for no reason at all? Come on this just makes no sense, I'm starting to think about being one of those guys that doesn't update anything at all.

Is there any way to downgrade iTunes versions or to ask Apple to integrate again the functions they are removing?

iTunes feedback. Tweet @applesupport. Tweet @TimCook. Email Tim Cook. File a radar. Make noise.
