My theory is that at some point Apple removed the possibility to mount an iPad as disk.

If you will confirm this theory, would you also please say which version of itunes last supported it. And perhaps, very useful, were one can get a .dmg of that 'old' iTunes. The option to check and manually backup is gone as the iPad does not show up on Finder. Do see image:

I do not want to use a third party tool to do this. I will consider a third party open source tool, however.

I simply want to access my iPad a a disk via Finder and copy over files to my laptop.

any further help, anymone? I simply need to know so I find the version of itunes that will make this possible.
