Selecting variable bit rate (256 kbps) under iTunes 7.6 isn't working. All of the tracks are imported at exactly 256.

I've not seen anyone else reporting this so is it just me? Any solutions?

UPDATE:

After some Googling I've discovered that this is a problem for others. It appears that with VBR selected, songs are imported with VBR but iTunes shows that non-variable rate. I'm confused as to (a) why Apple have done this and (b) it's not effecting everyone.

Thanks guys but the settings are definately correct (have tried without VBR and the 'higher quality' settings - they work correctly) and I've tried several CDs. Have even tried reinstalling iTunes.

I'm assuming there's a file that didn't get deleted/reinstalled when I reinstalled iTunes that's causing this but I'm out of ideas on this.
