I hope it's ok to post this here, it seemed the most appropriate place to put it.

I have a G4 mac with iTunes 7.7.1 and a PC with iTunes 12.8.0

The PC was given to me about 18 months ago and I decided to install iTunes on it and see if I could access my old iTunes account previously used solely on the mac (N.B. I haven't actually bought anything on iTunes since April 2011 but there is a tonne of music on the mac, some bought through iTunes and some ripped from my CD collection, which I play regularly).

I can't remember the exact course of events but given that I hadn't bought any music through iTunes in ages, when I came to set the PC up, I couldn't remember the password for my iTunes account. I guess I must've used the 'forgot password' option as I have several emails from around this time, one of which says something along the lines of '...you recently added <email address> as your new Apple ID. To verify this email address belongs to you, please enter the code below on the email verification page...blah, blah'

There's another email shortly afterwards confirming that changes were made to the Apple ID <not an email address but a name> which was my original ID from way back.

And that was that...I carried on playing music on my mac and pretty much forgot about iTunes on the PC.

Fast forward to today and I've just gone to play a track on the mac and got a message telling me that 'this computer is not authorised'...now I should point out that I've never de-authorised the mac, iTunes has lived on there for nearly 20 years, pretty much untouched, I've never received that message before.

Aha I think (I recently had to replace my mac as the old one died but I moved all my hard drives, optical drives, cards, everything, across into the replacement machine) maybe iTunes is picking up that this is a different machine somehow. So I try to log in with what I thought was the last password I ever used and got the following...

Could not complete your iTunes store request. An unknown error occurred (-9824). There was an error in the iTunes store. Please try again later

Aha I think (again) remember last year, you fiddled around with the account on the PC and probably changed the password. So I log into the iTunes account on the PC and realise that my Apple ID is now my email address. So back onto the mac I go, change the Apple ID in the login window, use the password I've just logged in with on the PC and got the same error message above.

On the PC, within iTunes, if I select my account information, my Apple ID is definitely my email address, furthermore, I know it's my original account because it has an ancient bank card registered to it that's long since expired.

It also confirms I have two computers authorised to play content purchased with this Apple ID.

So it begs the question, why can't I log into my iTunes account under iTunes 7.7.1 on the mac and why is it asking me to authorise it ?

Many thanks if you've read this far !

Actually I hadn't thought that the problem might be at the other end so to speak, although I can log into the iTunes store fine on the PC so perhaps it is my end ?
