iTunes 8.2 installation problem

I may be the last person on the planet to get an iPod ...so installation of iTunes is something I am only now experiencing for the first time. Should be easy, right? Well...not yet. My new 4th gen. iPod requires iTunes 8 or above. I downloaded 8.2 to my Mac mini...but keep getting the message that I must exit iTunes before installation can begin. I have exited iTunes...but it won't believe me and quickly drops me out of the "begin installation" window. I'm sure it's "me" doing something wrong rather than "it"...but I am at a loss. I'd be grateful for any suggestions. thanks.

Why don't you just use "Software Update" in Apple menu?

I suppose before running the installer you could bring up Activity Monitor to see if anything else related to iTunes like iTunes Helper is running in the background. Two articles I'll link here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1224 and http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2311. I would actually try removing iTunes completely before reinstalling that way you aren't told that its still running even when it isn't.
