iTunes account question

I didn't see iTunes forum, so posting here...

How to change the email id associated with the iTunes account? When I try to change it to my icloud id, it says this id is associated with another account.

i believe if you go to your account settings in iTunes and go to account information you are able to change your iCloud email.

Thats what I tried. It gives a message as:
"You cannot change this Apple ID to use an existing Mobileme email address. The email address you entered is already associated with an Apple ID. If its yours you can cancel and signin using that Apple ID."

So, how to go about this. If I login using icloud id, then it doesn't transfer my existing downloads to icloud id. So I want to update the email id associated with the Apple account.

I tried that, it says: Email address is already verified for another Apple ID.
So it doesn't let to update the email.
