iTunes: Allow Simultaneous Downloads causes system to hang

Hi
If I download several videos e.g. a TV series and enable Allow Simultaneous Downloads then after a few minutes Mac OS hangs to the point at which I need to remove the powerlead from my iMac.

I've a 24" 2008 iMac, latest updates of OS and iTunes.
The issue has been there on this setup for 2 years at least through multiple updates.

I've tried cleanly removing iTunes and reinstalling.

Has anybody else seen this or know of a fix ?
