iTunes and duplicates question/issue

I did a forum search to see if anyone else had asked this question, but didn't find any posts.

In iTunes, I create a playlist in the left-hand column, select it and drag a folder of mp3s into the right-hand window pane. But each song is duplicated and I don't understand why. Anyone help me understand why, please?
