itunes and phone sync "OTHER"

Can anybody tell me what the "OTHER" category is on the capacity bar in iTunes? I just bought the 5 and after a sync I see that "OTHER" is taking up 10.1GB of my space. I downsized to the 16GB model phone and hate to lose so much space. Can somebody help me reclaim some of my valuable storage space? Thank you.

you have to delete your backup and start a new one there's no other way

The "other" is what's req to run all the apps on your phone.

For some users, the Other won't go down unless you wipe your phone and start from scratch. Much of it is used for caching stuff and iOS can forget that it even cached it and doesn't provide a way to clean it. Think of it like a persistent memory leak.

Clear the cache in safari settings on your device. It can free up tonnes of space!
