This issue involves OS X 10.11.4 running iTunes 12.3.3.17.

I have a 100+ GB music library which is meticulously tagged and has been maintained and added to over years. I've spent quite some time recently fixing duplicate artists -- the issues for which a billion threads can be found between here and the Apple forums which, in some way or another, are a result of use of Artist and/or (or versus) Album Artist tags in conjunction with tracks flagged as part of compilations where "Billy Bob" as an artist name shows ten times for no reason, and which also seem to involve an iTunes bug, the fix for which involves writing over the Artist and/or Album Artist fields and restoring the proper information.

Now that I'm done fixing this, even though all songs are properly grouped under a single artist, some of those artists do not show under the Artists field for music sync to my phone or iPad.

All files are DRM-free MP3s using ID3 v2.3 tags obtained from various sources, most frequently from online purchases which I then converted to high-bitrate MP3 and/or ripped from CDs years ago.

Following some pointers in this old thread -- https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2218666?tstart=0 -- it would appear that album artists, whose CDs show appropriately under albums, whose content are on compilation CDs do not show in the list (for example, John Doe's album of remixes of someone else's songs) because all those songs are marked as part of a compilation. I'm not willing to unflag as part of a compilation because they are part of a compilation.

Anyone seen this or have any suggestions on how I might attempt to change this behavior, or do I have to resort to changing how I sync songs?
