iTunes artwork and music not on same hard drive

I have a large music library on an external hard drive.
But I noticed that I have a large folder named Album Artwork with a ton of .itc files on my Mac's hard drive.

I thought the artwork was embedded in the music files, I want to delete this folder with the itc files, but I would hate to replace all the artwork that I have now.
