iTunes auto syncing apps

So I just plugged in my iPhone to my computer for the first time and it auto synced all my apps. I don't have any boxes checked for syncing apps and my phone is set to backup with iCloud. Why did it sync all my apps to my computer? Now it's just wasting space.
