In what conditions would media file(s) placed in iTunes library, automatically update their location ?

I did this once,, but i can't remember how i did it.

I know moving a file and moving .it file would both ask to "locate" the file....but i do know auto-update of location happens, i'm just wondering in what use case.

eg.. I have backup my itunes .it file and movies to NAS.. Folder structure was preserved, but the actual location in the library was previously on external drive, which is now disconnected/wiped because i wish to re-do these movies again..

So, temporary i pointed iTunes to that of the one i backup... Thinking it would find movies since that library was pointing to external... i was amazed after i pointed across over network, it "updated" location..

Relieving this i tried to duplicate this issue making the same folder structure and same movie available on local mac... copied the .it from NAS over, but this time after I pointed to local file, i just got placeholder (so it didn't locate)

so...now i'm wondering what is the actual difference ? Its the same .it file i copied between NAS and Mac

first time, changed to new location of files without user input,, second time, it didn't, even though movie was copied on mac.
