Im sure this has been covered but Im not sure about the OLD answers on the web.
I have the latest Ipad and the latest Itunes version.

1st - every time I go into Itunes and plug in my ipad , Itunes starts a backup that I dont want... I dont see settings to manually control this and I would like it to stop.

2nd - The option i do see is to backup the ipad on THIS computer... to a local HD.... I Now have a 3TB external drive and I would like all activity , serviced on the external drive... But I cant find where I can direct the backup.

Any help would be appreciated...

The 2nd you can't do anything about through iTunes. Backups go in your user library which is a local hard drive issue. A third party app might allow you to do that kind of thing

But the first is actually easy when you know where to look.its in the iTunes preferences under the device tab. Check the line about preventing automatic syncing.
